Medical depression

All the many types of depression are known as medical problems.  There are many stages to depression. They can range from mild depression, Bi-polar disorders or manic depression, all the way up to major depression.  Depression is a real illness.  It’s a mental illness but still a disease like cancer or diabetes.  It is a disease that affects one of the bodily organs.  You aren’t somehow less just because you have depression. It does not place you in a category that is stereotyped as weird or nuts.  Just like other illnesses it can be treated.

To begin depression is invisible.  People get sad sometimes.  Things go wrong in our lives that leave us down and out and in the dumps.  That’s not depression.  Depression is not a situation where you are depressed temporarily.  Depression sticks with you for a long time.  Sadness that sticks around for months, and that touches every aspect of life is depression.  If your mood changes with the wind and you can be up one minute and down the next than you are certainly showing signs of depression.  If you are suffering from consistent insomnia or bad eating habits, these are also sure tell signs.

The cause of medical depression is sometimes complicated.  Many issues need to be considered.  Stress is a major factor in depression.  There is so much stress in our lives today.  Relationships bring stress.  We confront stress everyday as we try to conduct our financial obligations.  It seems the bills always over take the money you have coming in.  Raising children is stressful and so can result in medical depression. The stress of losing a loved one can result in much pain and emotional suffering that certainly can lead to forms of medical depression.  Chemical, environmental and even genetic issues further complicate the situation.

There are treatments for medical depression.  Medical depression attacks over 17 million people in the USA annually.  The negative result is that only a third will ever seek medical assistance.  It is hard to get a cure if you don’t get diagnosed.  Treatment usually involves a combination of therapy and medications or herbs.  Support groups where patients meet and talk with people with the same problem exist.  You do not have to get through medical depression alone.  Such a disease isn’t self healing.  Consult a doctor if you or someone you know shows signs of medical depression.
